Sonrisa Salon and Day Spa is participating in Walk for Water on April 25 to raise awareness and support for clean water projects in developing nations. The 6K walk begins Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at English Landing Park in Parkville, MO.

The local event is part of the worldwide Earth Month campaign sponsored by Aveda, a leading manufacturer of natural plant-based hair and skin products. Sonrisa team members, friends and family will join owners Karen Kissinger and Katie Paulus to raise money for clean water projects. This year’s goal of $3 million surpasses the $2.8 million raised by Aveda-sponsored events in 2008.

“Nearly one billion of the 6.1 billion people on Earth lack access to clean drinking water, according to the World Health Organization,” says Kissinger. “Disease caused by unclean drinking water is the third leading cause of death from infectious disease; the majority of these deaths are children under five years old. Those are staggering numbers.”

“Millions of women in developing nations walk an average of four miles every day to collect drinking water for their families, according to UNICEF,” said Paulus. “The average weight of the water is 44 pounds. The burden carried by these women in service to their families is an inspiration.”

Aveda has created a special “Light the Way” soy wax candle to raise funds in support of its global effort to make clean water a human right. Sponsors will receive a free candle for donating $10 in support of Sonrisa’s Walk for Water team. The stress relieving French-inspired aroma candle is made of 100% organic certified ingredients and is contained in 95% post-consumer recycled glass and packaged in cartons printed with soy ink on 100% recycled carton stock.
