Karen Kissinger and Katie Paulus do not take the term “eco-friendly” lightly; it is their guiding business philosophy as owners of Sonrisa Salon and Day Spa in Kansas City, North. The mother-daughter team purchased the salon in August 2008 and has set about transforming it into Kansas City’s premiere eco-friendly salon and day spa.

The green conversion began with construction of the salon, located at 6504 NW Prairie View Road off of I-29 and 64th Street. Every element from floors to paint to appliances had to meet tough environmental standards. “We worked with builders and contractors who understood our green commitment. Our flooring is recycled vinyl with no BPA fumes, the carpeting is made of recycled soda bottles and the paint is non-toxic with no volatile organic compounds (VOC),” says Kissinger. “Our guests and team members benefit from a healthy, non-toxic environment.

“The total environment is green and we are pursuing an even more complete green experience. We are the only salon and spa in Kansas City to join the Green Spa Network. Katie and I have just returned from the Network’s annual conference in San Francisco; we learned that there is so much more we can do in our green commitment. We have pledged to audit our water and energy usage and our waste,” she said.

Guests at Sonrisa are treated to a naturally healthy environment free of undue noise, toxins, pollution and waste. “The products we feature have been carefully chosen for healthful ingredients derived from plant-based sources, most of them organic,” said Paulus. “The companies who create our products are selected for their sustainable business practices.”

Aveda hair and skin products are familiar to many people, but others are not as well known. Eminence Organic Skincare’s Hungarian ingredient farm is 100% solar and wind powered and the laboratory is geothermal heated. All plants are harvested by hand, so there is minimal carbon dioxide (CO2) output. Sonrisa also features Terra Jewel Makeup, Brisa Gel Nails and CACI non-surgical facelift system.

“Our products are a pleasure to use; they don’t harm the health of our guests or the environment,” added Kissinger. “We are very proud of our green commitment and our guests feel good about using the products.”
